You articulate something that I have felt in a non-articulate way for some time. I was briefing a younger colleague on what I look for when I interview job candidates, and I was very unhelpful to her because all I said was “I try to raise various topics in conversation, and gauge their level of enthusiasm and curiosity.”
She wanted lists of questions to assess ability, I tend to feel like if the person is basically qualified, all I need is a willingness to learn, and most importantly to learn more than I can teach them.
